So If I remember correctly, this is for your “trust in me” au! I think you mentioned Leopardtaur Reader gets zoomies while Tigertaur Eclipse gets extremely touchy and relaxed. But what would happen is both got a hold of catnip at the same time? Would it just be Eclipse trying to wrangle us so he can get cuddly while we attempt to wrestle out of his grip and run around like a headless chicken? Regardless of the situation, he'd probably still be laying/sitting on us by the end of it since he weighs more!

Fun fact: catnip like effect originally comes from a similar plant that acts as natural bug repellent that grows in jungles and has all that same effects! I believe it's because it's in the same family if I recall correctly!

So it's very possible for this cat nip to be acquired within the jungle of "Trust in Me." Good to know hehe

As for both of the felines getting a dose of that stuff, it would be a very strange set of events in which Tigertaur Eclipse tries sluggishly and lazily to snatch Leopardtaur Y/N who's zooming by and back around. He can pin Y/N down for some mandatory cuddles but Y/N would be so wiggly and jittering in his grasp that it's almost not worth it. Almost. It would amuse Eclipse greatly to have to keep grabbing them and pinning them down but he's so languid and relaxed so he makes the most of it while swaying on the high of the catnip.

Just thinking of Peaches canon hyperfixation of plans and medicine and just... going into a rant whne he visits DBK's place the first time over some rare plant Redaon had cultivated and DBK jsut... standing in the background with a soft smile on his face as he sees his xiandi happy to talk about medicine and plants again and reminiscing on the times he'd talk his ear off when they were kids about the medical properties of various ingredients in the teas they'd make

Oh gosh this idea was cute I had to write out some dialogue for it;

It's one of few herbs that works for me." Wukong: "Mao Bo He causes mild intoxication and feelings of elation in cats! Lions are just big cats after all." DBK, surprised/amused: "So Brother Azure was drunk off my insect repellent?" Wukong, getting excited: "Yes! In a way! There's some other plants that cause a similar effect but it's different for every individual- oh... sorry." DBK: "For what?" Wukong, nervous: "I've been told I... get too excited when discussing herbs and treatments like that," DBK, smiling: "I have no issue in hearing you describe them. You clearly hold much joy for the subject." Wukong: "You don't think I'm annoying?" DBK: "Not at all. If I had, I would have said so. My ancestor was a herbalist himself after all. Now, tell me xiandi, what can I use to keep the flies away that won't make our proud Brother Azure turn into a kitten at the mere scent of me?" Later in the Peach Soup au as Peaches is receiving training from DBK.

Peaches: "Oh! Thats a Zhi Zi!" DBK: "Hmm?" Peaches, pointing to a flower in the courtyard: "Gardeniae jasminoides. Sometimes its called a gardenia or a cape jasmine. It shows up in some of my books." DBK, knowing smile: "Really? Red Son collected some plants during his time learning under Guanyin. I had always assumed it to be a regular jasmine plant." Peaches: "That's ok! They look really alike and smell nearly the same! One way to tell them apart is to check the leaves. Smooth leaves mean Jasmine, Toothed leaves mean Gardenia!" DBK: (*fond chuckle!*) Peaches: "Oh sorry! Was I rambling? I apologise if I got a little carried away." DBK: "Not at all! Where did you come across such knowledge by the way?" Peaches, little bashful: "My uncle Sandy introduced me to different tea blends when I was younger, and from there I wanted to know more about plants and herbs and how they help people. I was actually hoping to become a doctor or a pharmacist before all of this... monkey business happened." DBK: "It's never too late to return to your passion. You always wanted to heal people, xiandi. Even back then." Peaches: (*shy smile as he realises what DBK means*)

It leads to a rare moment where Peaches discovers something positive he shares with "old him". Who knew Sun Wukong was a nerd back then too?

DBK is elated to see this side of his little brother live on - Wukong had put aside many dreams due to the War, and herbalism was sadly one of them. Wukong did continue to pursue medicinal knowledge after the fact, but his duty as a king and near-god had kept him anchored.

Peaches has lived 18 years with no such anchor. DBK is excited and cautious to see what path he chooses.

Might Catnip affect WIF!Donnie? Some turtle species make a sound that can resemble a purr, but would WIF!Donnie have a real purr instead of a sound that only sounds similar to one? And actual Feline pure? What kind of Toxins does his Manticore tail have?

Would there be different species of manticores depending on the species of birds for their wings, the cats they resemble, and the Arthropods its tail is from?

Purring? Hmmm... stumped me for a moment and i had to do some research since id never studied up on this before. YUP! Donnie can purr, just like a cat. He doesnt have full control over it though. Its a subconscious reflex and half the time he doesnt notice hes started purring. He can purr intentionally when he wants to though!

I found an interesting note about cats purring as a soothing mechanism when stressed or hurt too, not just when theyre feeling relaxed and comfortable. So that got me thinking, would he purr as a wordless and non-physical gesture, in an attempt to comfort his brothers when hes noticed they needed it??

His tail? It has neurotoxins! Possible venom effects from getting stung by him, might cause:

Vomiting

Extreme anxiety

Breathing difficulties

Severe pain around the sting

Limb wide numbness or tingling

Partial paralysis of the effected limb

In WFI!Donnies case, these effects are all dialed up and have a very real possibility of being fatal without a cure 👀 since his venom is mutated... for example: itd likely be fullbody paralysis instead of just a limb being effected.

There are probably different species of manticore, just like there are different species of cats. I dont plan on conjuring up that much manticore background lore for this au though xD i havent thought much about the possibility of different species. I will say that the species of manticore Donnie got his dna from, were very fond of water like some types of cats are! And because of that, they all have wings adapted for underwater use aswell as flying. There probably are different classifications of manticore if you separated them by their wings/tails/cats they resemble, not all of them will have feathered wings and not all of them will have scorpionesque tails.

Mm maybe, I can see that happening. I don't think it would be catnip though, as cute and playful as they are, I don't see them as 'cats' really.

I think cinnamon sticks would be better fitted, or specific earthy spices like cloves. They chew and teethe on cinnamon sticks and the aroma reminds them of smoke so they get all hyper 😖 Cinnamon reminds me of something that always includes warmth, the seasons that bring cinnamon just make me think of a fire and smoke.

I think you could make a blend of these things to mimic catnip and make 'bamfnip.' Here's a recipe for you!

3 cups of crushed cinnamon sticks, not powder. Small chunks work best.

1 1/2 cup of crushed cloves, add as necessary

1/4 cup of charcoal, can be taken from remains of a past fire or pure charcoal

1/4 cup of crushed Badian

1/4 cup of lavender buds

1/4 cup of valerian root

1/4 cup of Skullcap

Mix together in a bowl, make sure cinnamon is the dominant ingredient.

Place in a smoker. The smoke will infuse with the spices and herbs, giving them a familiar scent and taste.

Place in a storage jar with a strong seal. Let sit for a day, then serve on top of food or stand alone.

Results will encourage hyperactivity, reduce anxiety and stress, and give a small spike of euphoria, causing them to experience a high. This high is harmless as the spices and herbs don't have any serious effects to their health. Bamfs naturally consume these spices and herbs, so it benefits their health!

Do not be alarmed if some bamfs become sleepy or sluggish instead of hyperactive. Results vary per bamf.

Important: Crushing encourages chewing and teething. Bamf teeth don't stop growing! They sharpen as well as grow, so they chew to dull their teeth so they don't bite themselves on accident.

you know how cats have those scruffs on the back of their necks? Kwazii probably has one.

imagine he's telling Peso about some creepy sea monster myth but then someone sneaks up behind him and pinches the scruff on his neck. he proceeds to start purring while his pupils dilate like crazy and its fricking hilarious.

Actually, this might be true if he was a kitten, but as cats grow older not only do they lose the placating effect when being held by the scruff (they will be EXTREMELY stressed out more often than not) but it also gains a new purpose.

Alot of animals have different survival tactics when it comes to dealing with personal enemies or larger animals coming for your neck. The cat method is "if u grab the extra skin on my neck,I can still fully turn around and scratch you and bite you, you thought u had me pinned huh? Well you're wrong get ready for a world of pain I'm flexible btch" and honestly "I'm flexible btch" is probably like 87% of how cats survive and fight lmsoo

(The only other time that the scruff is bitten by another adult cat in a less violent content is during mating :/ )

However! I get the feeling what you're looking for is that wide pupil purring effect🤌- which catnip *can* induce! When cats *smell* catnip its very stimulating and can give a sense of happiness which makes them super affectionate and playful (and generally hyperactive)

Irl cat behaviour for this would mean stuff like rolling around, rubbing against stuff and people, and just being silly and playful in general.If a cat *eats* catnip it can have a more soothing effect that makes them calm and even a lil sleepy yk? So the latter is probably what ur looking for

Catnip doesn't actually give cats a "high" like humans understand it btw because they don't really have negative side effects to their health (the smell just has chemical combos that feel like feline pheromones that make em feel happy) and they also can't become addicted to it.

Additional information is that only like 60% of cats can even be effected by catnip due to a certain gene they have👍 kittens also aren't effected by catnip btw 🤷‍♀️ its possible that one of the evolutionary reasons for cats like to rub against catnip is because catnip is just a bit of a natural bug repellent which is great for wild cats

NOT ONLY do meif’wa smoke catnip, but they also bake it into certain foods and make it into tea.

I imagine it has a similar effect as weed, with bad reactions being rare. It calms them, gives them a general sense of euphoria and can be used to relieve pain. Though if ingested in large quantities, it can work almost like melatonin, helping them relax and fall asleep. It does not cause hallucinations.

Meif’wa don’t really drink alcohol, but when they reach a certain age (i’m thinking around 15 or 16) they have their first catnip tea on their birthday, like how people (in america at least) have their first drink at 21.

either way meif’wa catnip culture is like the opposite of (modern) human weed culture. it’s not taboo or judged, it’s something that’s very important to them and their culture.

On another, completely unrelated note, many werewolve tribes call it Sedativus Herbāceus (sedative herb). They tend to use it to well.. sedative others. Usually if they’re sick, injured, or need some kind of medical attention. Though they have used it for other purposes.

Catnip does have an effect on humans, the same as meif’wa, it’s just not as potent unless taken in large quantities.

Thank you for the tag @ineadhyn ! Really excited to do this.

When did you start writing?

I started writing at age .. eleven, I think? It was a story about a girl getting taken to a parallel world populated by elves to save their world. Pretty cliché, but I also took some inspiration from some historical sources I liked at the time, so it did at least kickstart my knack for worldbuilding.

I wrote some more, I stopped, grew up, graduated, entered fandom spaces and remembered "hey, you used to love writing, what happened?" (depression, mostly). I wrote a modern AU for a game I was playing at the time. I stopped again. You'll never guess why. I made writer friends. I created a character I loved so much that I had to bring their story to paper and later created my novel project. I went from zero to hundred and haven't stopped in 3 years. The rest is history.

Are there different themes or genres you enjoy reading more than what you write?

One thing I love that I don't really write much are humorous pieces. Those are my catnip. Other than that, I pretty much read what I write!

Is there a writer you want to emulate or get compared to often?

I don't have any big-name authors - but I do have some wonderfully talented friends and acquaintances that, if someone told me our writing was similar, I would be overjoyed. My friend keeps telling me I have a "film noir" style, and I do try to keep that going in everything I write.

Can you tell me a bit about your writing space?

I prefer to write in cafés or libraries. Otherwise just at home on the couch or in bed, and those are far from glamorous. If i tell you I am writing, there is a 90% chance I am wearing nothing but boxer shorts and drinking coffee independently of the hour. I also light some incense or scented candles to write. Y'know, for the Omnissiah

What’s your most effective way to muster up a muse?

Go on a walk. Play some thematically completely unfitting music. Think long and hard about the vibes. Stop every 100m to make notes on your phone. This works best if it is 2am, I wish I was joking.

Alternatively: Swim for about 2km. Be alone with your thoughts and see where it takes you. Good luck remembering those ideas when you leave the water though.

Are there any recurring themes in your writing? Do they surprise you?

Religious Imagery and discussion: This one is complicated, because I am technically raised close to atheist, but religion as a concept did have a huge pull on me as a child. If you grow up being told there is something wrong with you, the idea of "Some god made you, and you are exactly the way you are supposed to be" is a magical thing. Of course, reality looks different. Half surprise, half not? When I found out the RT fandom has a whole subsection of fics dealing with the symbols of the Inqusition I was like. well, this calls my name. Also I met some of my closest friends via the discussion of churches as a setting and very angry [redacted] in said churches so. Hello gang. 👋🏻

My ultimate tagline is "Violence as desire and desire as violence" and while the pattern did take me through some introspection, not surprised either.

Repression. Again, are we surprised? No. Not really. I'm generally very aware of my themes, I'd say, but please enlighten me if I forgot something. Submit me to the ordeal of being known etc etc

What is your reason for writing?

I do enjoy it, I have ideas, and those ideas need to out or start paying rent.

Is there any specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating?

Nope! I enjoy all of them. You can get brownie points for citing favorite lines or saying something that makes me feel seen!

When two people I really look up to in terms of style described my prose as "clean" and "effortless" I just about died, because I never thought of myself that way. Same as when someone observes themes and patterns that even I haven't noticed. Also when a dear person replied to my WIP with "I'm going to eat your fingers", that made me laugh so hard I still think of it.

In short: You have something unhinged to say - Say it. I love comments so wild they have never been heard before.

How do you want to be thought about by your readers?

"Damn, there is something awfully wrong with that guy but I'm into it. Also that prose fucks."

What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?

I hate how edgy this is going to sound, but my strength is writing darkness. Overdrawn emotions taken into the extreme - obsession, hatred, desire, but also coldness or hopelessness and despair. I love themes and emotions that don't exactly fall in the middle of the bell curve, because writing them is fun, and there is merit in exploring them. I often joke that my experiences at least enable me to write really weird stuff, but I mainly just favor these topics because it allows me to get really poetic with my language.

TL;DR: I put the lust in bloodlust.

How do you feel about your own writing?

This is a tricky question for me to answer at the moment, because I've been going through it™️ and my perception is clouded by that. Generally I'm pretty confident - I know my strengths and weaknesses and I know what I put out there is okay. On the other hand, I feel like the vulnerability is needed to keep me humble. Whenever I approach something with too much "I can do this!" it turns out dogshit. However, I feel at least that what I provide is unique to some degree.

When you write, are you influenced by what others enjoy or might enjoy reading, or do you write purely for yourself, or a mix of both?

I write for an audience of one - what I wrote is what I wanted to read. Quite a few of my works are so limited in their audience that they never make it to posting. I get ecstatic when people show interest, and that is the main reason I share, but I try not to keep an imaginary audience in my head when I write. It hinders me. I love doing gift works, and I approach them with the mindset of "I'm going to give you something that's for you specifically but still has my unique spin on it" and of course factor their enjoyment into my writing, but try not to overthink to the degree it stops my enjoyment.

Let it be said, I love my fandom friends, and want to write them all the things.

School for Monstrous Youths- More Headcanons for You!

Random burst of inspiration, and this was the result! Enjoy these Headcanons for the Monster kiddies! As always, @imsparky2002 and @artzychic27!

After an incredibly stressful week of school had everyone at their wits end and snapping at one another, Adrien brought all of his friends together for a ‘Feelings Circle’ to air out their emotions and relieve the tension between them. It worked so well that they instituted it as a biweekly routine, with additional ones able to called for if needed. It’s help to establish a close bond of trust between the classes.

Yetis have an incredibly high tolerance for pain, especially blunt force (lots of falling rocks and snow), so much so that when Ivan had a solid granite countertop for the Home Ec classroom dropped on his head, his only reaction was a deadpan “Huh.”, before he walked away as if nothing had happened.

Ismael and Kim can shift into a wolf and mountain lion-esque cat respectively. Their speed and strength are enhanced in these forms, and they retain some ability to speak. (Ondine likes snuggling with Kim in his wolf form.)

Similar to Ismael’s situation with catnip, wolfsbane has an…interesting effect on Kim. It can best be described as a mild aphrodisiac, Kim becoming even more affectionate than usual (all his friends will be bear-hugged at least once and told repeatedly that he loves them) as well as leaving him incredibly emotional and prone to burst into tears at the drop of a hat.

Cosette and Kagami regularly help each other sharpen their horns, as this is an aspect of appearance that both of their species take a lot of pride in.

If Marinette is able to maintain complete concentration, she can focus the effects of her voodoo magic onto one specific person. She has only ever done this with Lila and a few other bullies.

The venom from Alix’s snakes is potent enough to kill you within five minutes of being bitten, so harassing, grabbing or throwing things at them is not recommended!

Simon is known for his large, one-lens glasses, but he had a brief monocle phase last year that none of his friends will ever let him live down.

As mentioned, Mylene’s vines are constantly growing, but if she stays in one place too long, they have the tendency to begin winding around furniture, loose objects and even other people! She always has to have a pair of trimmers handy because of this. She also has a stable tardy pass.

Being a feline, Ismael is incredibly agile, able to jump great distances, balance on small surfaces, scale just about any incline regardless of steepness and of course, always landing on his feet.

Reshma can adjust the thickness and durability of the webs she spins, from delicate thread that can be used for sewing to industrial-strength rope that’s harder to break than iron chains.

Due to being mixed, Ondine can breathe and survive in both freshwater and saltwater. Her scales will also turn darker and lighter blue depending on the last she came into contact with.

Marc is multi-ambidextrous and can write with all four of his hands at once, which helps when he’s working on multiple storylines at one time!

The only type of music that Jean doesn’t like is “Mumble Rap”. (“It all sounds the same! What’s the point of writin’ a song if no one can understand the lyrics?!”)

Marinette keeps stick-on fabric patches in her backpack for if her skin gets torn or ripped, as a temporary fix until she can sew herself up in her room, where it won’t hurt anyone!

Enemies immune to Freezing will become Chilled, and once they lose the immunity, they will become Frozen.

It appears that Ice is going to be a new element this update, as Earth was with the now-ending Golden Cheese Kingdom update. Activation conditions for her enhanced skill are still unknown, but my guess is that this is a multi-hit attack with Freeze assurance similar to Moonlight Cookie’s Drowsy condition that induces Sleep after immunities expire.

· Team’s Ice-type DMG: +n%, Freeze n% chance when all allies deal Ice-type DMG to a Frost target

· Freeze Duration: n sec

· DMG After Freeze: n% of Frost Queen Cookie’s ATK

Teammates that deal Ice damage to an opponent who has the Frost debuff enjoy a chance to Freeze them directly with their own skill when dealing Ice-based damage. The post-Freeze damage dealt when Freeze expires normally (and not from being cleansed by another skill) scales with Frost Queen Cookie’s ATK stat. My tip? Bring about three winter-themed Cookies to make up your primary attacking force, leaving one space open for Frost Queen Cookie (to actually use her rally effect), and another space open for a healer of your choice.

- Icicle Yeti Cookie is a Healer Cookie that uses the skill “Let’s Be Friends!”

- Skill Description: Icicle Yeti Cookie buffs the allies and periodically restores their HP. They will assume the yeti form, jump towards the nearest enemy, and create a Shield of Ice to protect them. The Shield of Ice will absorb a portion of all incoming direct non-periodic damage and make the team resistant to Freezing. Then, Icicle Yeti Cookie will return to their position and deal a portion of the damage received in the yeti form with an icicle attack.

A frontline healer? That’s a new one for the canon lineup. Especially one that will most likely deal damage as part of their regular skill and not just something that changes as a last-stand effect (I’m looking at you, Carol). Seems more fitting to be a Defense Cookie imo, but this is what they gave us.

■ NEW: PAVILION OF PROMISE

- Meet a new friend at the Pavilion of Promise—a magnum opus built by Maestro Sugar Gnome!

- Fill the meter full to meet new Cookies.

- You will require Purity Crystals or other Special Items to fill the meter. There is a certain chance that you will meet the Cookie without having to fill the meter all the way up.

· Three new regular attempts will be added every midnight and accumulate up until a total of 15 attempts.

· There is a higher chance to obtain Cookies when you use their Special Items.

· The probability of meeting Cookies will increase according to the number of points on the meter. Once you have obtained the Cookie, the point meter will reset. However, if you have exceeded the maximum number of points, the surplus will be carried over to the next cycle.

The perceived rules here are probably going to be the same as it was when Snapdragon Cookie was added to the game, as it’s a permanent feature that allows you to gradually max out these Special Cookies over time and ascend them to 5A. The only way that these areas will close is if you ascend them to 5A. The fact that they renovated this area to fit a second Cookie suggests that they’re gonna do this semi-regularly and that this isn’t a two-off fluke.

■ WINTER COOKIE GACHA

- Increase your chances of pulling a frosty Winter Cookie from the Winter Cookie Gacha!

- You can access the “Winter Cookie Gacha” in the Gacha > Cookie tab.

- It requires x300 Crystals for x1 Cookie pull.

Because Icicle Yeti Cookie is the new Cookie and is rated as Special, that leaves no new Epic Cookie. This is their solution for that, but the good part is that it presents a chance to get Sherbet Cookie (Super Epic) with better odds without jumping through too many hoops unless you had insane luck like me, who got him from his event banner in 6 pulls last year. If you did that, then that’s for his Soulstones.

■ NEW MAGIC CANDY: SNOW SUGAR COOKIE

- Magic Candy Effect: The power of the Magic Candy makes Snow King even stronger and makes this icy giant immune to ATK SPD changes. Snow King will also absorb a portion of the damage received by Snow Sugar Cookie.

This Magic Candy skill is mostly centered around Snow King as Snow Sugar Cookie’s summon and their abilities to protect Snow Sugar Cookie more effectively. Snow King’s ice breath attack will deal more damage to enemies slowed down by their attack via their “Freeze” slowdown debuff, which also now heals Snow Sugar Cookie for part of the damage caused. Snow King will also take some of the damage directed towards Snow Sugar Cookie when Snow Sugar Cookie gets damaged. This damage essentially becomes nullified damage since Snow King’s HP is reset to full every time this skill summons them, allowing Snow Sugar Cookie to stay in the fight longer.

- You can receive First Clear Rewards for completing the campaign on each difficulty level.

This is worded weirdly. Basically, the current existing reward for clearing the entire campaign in a season of Cookie Alliance (lots of Crystals, Tea Knight Cookie’s exclusive Epic Costume, etc) can be claimed by clearing the 20-wave Expert difficulty level if you haven’t claimed it already.

- A new feature where you can enhance Cookies’ elemental skills called “Artifacts” has been added.

- Artifacts will give you an edge in battle by enhancing Cookies’ elemental skills.

- You can obtain Artifact Points as rewards by playing in the Cookie Alliance campaign.

The Beacon of Valor’s effects have been nerfed. Cookies will no longer get a temporary level 60 boost, and the Opening Blast will become shorter. The duration of the Blast is now based on how many Cookies in your campaign group (out of all 15 Cookies used) are level 40 or more. Relics that boost your Blast effect have also been nerfed down to a maximum of 14 seconds from 22. The Master and Hero difficulty levels (the two highest levels) remove the Blast buffs given from Guild Relics down to the raw 6 seconds maximum provided by the Beacon.

To compensate this, the Coin cost to ignite the beacon has been reduced by 60%. With the new update, you will lose your existing Beacon and get a Coin refund based on the number of days left if you have an active Beacon.

- Suggested element types and effects have been added to the Cookie Alliance lobby.

- Battles can be played in auto mode.

- The default is set in auto mode, but you can choose to play in manual mode.

Manual mode is new for Cookie Alliance, but it will allow you to manually use skills as needed just like in other modes instead of vigorously relying on timing through Toppings and Treasures to get a synergetic combo usually seen in Arena.

■ GUILD MUSEUM: HALL OF HISTORY II

- New relics from the Dark Cacao Kingdom and the Golden Cheese Kingdom are on display in the Guild Museum! Don’t miss out on your chance to see some rare artifacts!

he is extremely cat coded. outwardly, he's got ears, two tails tipped with a special ghostflame, claws, canines, and claws. but he also purrs when he's extremely comfortable, or content. sitting in direct sunlight for long enough makes him very sleepy-- and he... he sleeps a lot. there is also slow blinking at folks he's comfortable around or likes, enjoying small spaces, and on very rare occasion... bunting.

his body runs pretty hot. his ghostfire only burns what he wants it to burn but it's still warm, hot to touch. so his base temp would probably make a doctor kind of... ??

he is terrified of anesidora.

though kuro can eat and drink almost anything. he does have a primarily carnivorous diet, and not eating enough meat can lead to him feeling unwell.

after some time kuro does leave the shadow.decree, and joins the union. there's a pretty big gap there, where kuro was essentially homeless. though he did live in abandoned homes near miramon infested areas.

when he goes to the academy, he is accompanied by a small cat stuffed animal given to him by @paramythas's xun.

catnip? i feel? might have some mildly doping effects on kuro. he has a lot of senses similar to a cat. so it would make sense...

he has the ability to speak to cats of any kind. he usually talks to the strays and any house cats he might come across. asking them for help, or to keep an eye out for things, or people. sometimes he might ask them to get something for him though.

A completely unrelated note, since the queen mother and PIF are big cats in your verse(PIF being half), would catnip effect them?

Big cats can be effected by catnip and there are some cats that develop a tolerance to it. Catnip was discovered around the late 1600s and surprisingly is in the mint family. And on contrary to dogs it brings calmness and relaxation.

So for the queen mother, I imagine Erlang brings back this nice looking bunch of flowers that were near wild mint that relaxed Quan to the celestial realm. Jade Emperor saw it and asked Erlang if he has some more bc the flowers look nice and thought it'd make a nice bouquet to send to his wife. Unfortunately once it was presented to her she face planted on the catnip. She has developed a tolerance so it wouldn't be used against her.

PIF accidentally stumbled upon catnip by accident during DBK’s imprisonment and ended up rolling around it eventually developing a tolerance to it to ease her depression during the time.

What about Redson, Nezha, Bai He and other cat related characters in the AUs?

Catnip and Catmint are in the mint family, and are related to Snapdragons - something more obvious when it's in bloom. Some cats are more affected than others, my own elderly house cat doesn't care for it but loves silvervine.

Other plants that cause a similar reaction in cats are Valerian (Honeysuckle family) and Silvervine/Matatabi (kiwi family). Hilariously, all are used frequently in traditional Chinese medicine, Catnip for cough medicine, Valerian as a sedative, and Silvervine to prevent hypertension. Silvervine sticks are also sold as teething aids for cats.

I love the imagery of Erlang grabbing some catnip cus Quan seems to like it (catnip calms dogs down), and the Jade Emperor asking for some as decoration in a bouquet for his dear Tiger Lily.

The Queen Mother looks at her husband's bouquet, and after an adoring smile, shoves her entire face into the flowers whilst purring loudly. The Emperor at first thought he just did really well when his wife then proceeded to pounce on him hungrily. One lesser known side effect of catnip - makes larger cats randy. XD

Xiwangmu embarrassed by her reaction, at first thought it was an attempted poisoning or seduction. Li Shou, the goddess of cats, overheard the incident and was there to defend Erlang from punishment.

Li Shou: "Mao Bo He! It's a breed of mint beloved by my subjects! It blooms very briefly and the oils help keep biting insects away." Xiwangmu: "But what of my... undignified reaction?" Li Shou, giggling: "Oh thats normal! In order to spread its pollen, the plant causes a euphoric reaction in cats, and since the oil of the plant is released when bruised - it encourages you to rub into it." Xiwangmu: "Goodness! However, if it's meant for your subjects, why am I affected?" Li Shou: "It seems Mao Bo He is indiscriminate which type of cats it affects." (*the two look over to where Erlang and some of the celestial agents are watching Azure Lion rolling in the remaining flowers.*) Li Shou, laughing: "No matter the size!"

The Queen Mother doesn't want the plant used against her in the future, so she secretly has it planted in her Jade Pond garden so that she can develop a passive resistance. The first couple of years were a little awkward though - it appears half her daughters are affected too!

Funnily enough, catnip oil has been used as an insect repellent for cattle since ancient times - so it's not out of the realm of possibly for DBK to have some on hand. Imagine slapping on some sunscreen and your gf start rubbing all over you. DBK wouldn't be 100% upset by PIF's reaction, but he'd make sure to switch to citronella or similar so he doesn't accidentally dose her in future. PIF appreciates his consideration, but keeps some around for fun. >:3

PIF canonically "hits the bottle" in Jttw when her marriage is on the rocks, so I could see her "hitting the 'nip" as well to deal with the pain of losing DBK during his imprisonment. She's managed to wean herself off of it, and bars Red Son from having any out of fear of him developing a similar reliance.

Red Son accidentally gets exposed to catnip when he joins Mei and MK on one of their snack runs. He passes by the pet section and gets entranced by a catnip toy. He buys it for himself, and while his reaction isn't as strong as his mothers, it brings him calm. He gets grounded when his mother sniffs it on him.

Nezha is more snake-like in his lineage, so catnip just smells nice like how lavender does to humans. He does however, have a stronger reaction to valerian - he took some to help with insomnia and he was out of it for the rest of the day. He chalks it up to a weird drug side effect.

Azure Lion has the most intense reaction to the 'nip - male lions especially become big kitty cats when exposed to it. He got introduced to it in the celestial realm on accident when Erlang brought it in. And you know he sneaking into the Empress's garden to roll around in it when no one's looking. The rest of the Brotherhood found out about this reaction when DBK had put on some insect repellent, and Azure got a little silly. It became a bit of a prank to leave catnip in Azure's armour for a bit to humble him. He hasn't been exposed to it in a long time, so if he happened to find a even a tiny cat toy he'd be out for the count. No plans for universe domination, leader of the rebellion too high rn.

Bai He is part cat-demon in the TMKATI au, so she's involved in all his catnip talk. Kittens actually don't get effected by catnip like the adults do till they're teenagers, so Bai He likely doesn't have a reaction until one day her parents find her face buried in Sandy's cat toys. The adults agree to keep catnip out of the house and the restaurant, but they keep some Silvervine sticks to help Bai He with her teething adult fangs.

And ofc Mo is a kitty-kitty cat and just rolls around in the nip like a cat do.

In every work, there is a delineation between main characters and peripheral characters. This is more marked in non-realist fiction, where the story is more bound by conventions of narrative than imitations of history. Main characters, because of what fiction does, are more influential, independent, complex, unlikely, and remarkable than peripheral characters because they are the main characters. It wouldn’t work otherwise.

The conservation of character (save the most stuff for the ones that are important / focus the story around the most consequential characters) means that any reader of more than a few works will automatically consider the characters of a story in two different classes: those who do and those who don’t; paper dolls that interact with the paper scenery VS crayon outlines on the paper scenery.

In works that try to maintain a depth of detail similar to histories/to reality, the sharp delineation of main character from side character can break immersion. Functionally, it’s harder to make a story work if the main characters don’t think or do anything (though people have tried) and the side characters do. But, a work aiming for the emotional stakes of realism needs to convince you that the main characters are part of a greater world populated by fellow human beings.

When main characters ‘get away’ with improbable actions or side characters ‘get shafted’ by being assigned definite traits with no story arc, the expectations of a realistic world clash with the expectations of story. A side character given any details must be important, and if they are given detail without story, then it can feel like a failure of the work (even if the author was just trying to splash in some flavour). A main character loses resonance if their role in the story can only be explained by ‘these events needed to happen’ rather than by the emotional coherent choices of a plausible person. The boundaries between main and side characters must be maintained for a realist (non-formal) fiction to communicate effectively. If it’s formal……you get a bit more lenience when you can just write ‘this is the main character and you know it’ into the text.

Which brings us to: it’s easy to read a metatextual (am I using this right. Probs not.) hierarchy realistic stories. Side characters are, within their own world, designated losers. They can’t have any impact on their own lives, otherwise they’d be main characters. Nowhere is this boundary sharper than in RPGs. NPC story arcs have be handled on the side by one very busy co-author, while PC story arcs each get one author’s full attention. The NPCs are. Well. NPCs. Tulpas. Shapes of shapes of people, shadows of the shadows on the cave wall. They are imperfect imitations of PCs, which are themselves imitations of people that might possibly exist.

That then creates a massive opening in any RPG (video game or tabletop) to play with player or audience expectations about NPCs. If they’re predetermined to be city guards repeating the same line of dialogue forever, you can easily get a strong audience reaction from having them break out of these roles. The NPC is a creation that, ironically, is the character any audience member is most likely to be like. So the event of an NPC (a true NPC merchant in the town square) breaking into the story to influence it is catnip to Moi
